Since its establishment in 1945, the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research has provided low fee psychoanalytic treatment to people in the greater metropolitan area. As part of the Department of Psychiatry of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Center is an integral part of a scientific environment enriched by experts from the biological, psychological, and social sciences. |

Psychoanalysis is an intensive psychotherapeutic treatment that extends beyond symptom relief, to develop a deep understanding of the patient’s inner life and, through this understanding, to improve the patient’s functioning in the world. During psychoanalysis, the patient and analyst meet four times per week, creating a confidential and safe relationship, in which the patient’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are explored in depth. |

Psychoanalytic treatment with children
and adolescents is based on the same principles described above,
but the treatment is modified to suit the developmental needs of
the individual child. For example, play is the main way that younger
children communicate their feelings and worries and therefore play
is the primary modality for that age group. Children from 3 to
20 can be seen for consultation and treatment recommendations which
include these developmental considerations. |
|
Referral to our Parent-Infant Program for consultation and psychotherapy is available. The parent and infant are seen conjointly and recommendations for follow-up are tailored to the needs of the family. |
|
When indicated, medications may be combined with psychoanalytic treatments. Medication may be needed to relieve debilitating symptoms of anxiety and depression that may hinder psychoanalytic progress.

The Admissions and Treatment Service of the Psychoanalytic Center offers diagnostic consultations and psychoanalysis at very low fees. If psychoanalysis is not the best treatment at this time, referrals for other forms of treatment can be arranged. For further information about consultations or for applications, please call the Psychoanalytic Center at 212-927-0112. |
