TRAINING PROGRAMS

The Psychoanalytic Center offers a wide variety of training programs for interested mental health professionals. In addition, the center offers an Affiliate Scholars Program for professionals who feel that a psychoanalytic understanding can enrich their pursuits.

Adult Psychoanalysis Training Program

The program covers a period of generally five, but not less than four years of training. It includes (1) personal analysis; (2) classroom teaching , including formal courses and seminars on theory and practice, clinical conferences, and continuous case seminars; and (3) intensive supervision of psychoanalyses of adult patients.

Program in Child and Adolescent Psychoanalysis

Child analytic training is open to candidates in the adult program who have a background in child work, individuals who have completed adult training elsewhere and  are members of the American Psychoanalytic Association, and child clinicians who are interested in pursuing accelerated child training without prior adult analytic training. All candidates must have focused on child work in their previous training.
These three categories of trainees must all take two years of each of two child courses, Theory and Technique and Development and Psychopathology. They are expected to attend a continuous case conference given monthly in the evening and are required to treat three cases in supervision. For concurrent candidates in adult training, a total of five cases including a late adolescent meets requirements for both adult and child graduation.

Affiliate Scholars Program

Through the Affiliate Scholars Program, scholars from a variety of fields may deepen their understanding of psychoanalytic theory by taking classes at the Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. Usually the course of study is for one year, in which Affiliate Scholars choose from among the classes offered at the Psychoanalytic Center, those that will most enrich their research or writing.

The course of study is chosen in consultation with a faculty advisor from the Psychoanalytic Center, and is tailored to the particular interests of the individual. The Affiliate Scholars participate in seminars along with psychiatrists and psychologists who are training to become psychoanalysts. The seminars are taught by senior faculty of the Psychoanalytic Center. We have found that the interdisciplinary makeup of the classes is intellectually enlivening for all, and we welcome applications from writers and scholars in the humanities, social sciences, the arts, and sciences.
