Psychoanalysis is an intensive psychotherapeutic treatment that extends beyond symptom relief, to develop a deep understanding of the patient’s inner life and, through this understanding, to improve the patient’s functioning in the world. During psychoanalysis, the patient and analyst meet four times per week, creating a confidential and safe relationship, in which the patient’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are explored in depth.

Psychoanalysis is a modern, effective treatment for healing emotional pain and promoting personal growth. Here are a few of the many problems psychoanalysis can help:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • low self-esteem
  • repeated disappointments or difficulties in intimate relationships
  • sexual problems
  • lack of success at work
  • trouble with anger
  • indecision and emotional paralysis
  • diminished capacity for pleasure
  • creative “blocks”

At the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, the psychoanalysts are experienced clinicians who are undergoing their advanced training in psychoanalysis. They are either M.D.’s trained in Psychiatry or Clinical Psychologists with Ph.D.’s or PsyD's. Candidates accepted for training must meet high professional standards. Private referrals to graduate analysts are also available.
